Maximum shear stress criterion

The maximum shear stress criterion (Tresca yield criterion) is based on the Maximum Shear stress theory.
The Maximum shear stress criterion is used for ductile materials.
For a condition of pure shear, Mises stress criterion predicts failure at (0.58 ⋅ yield strength), while the shear stress criterion predicts failure at (0.5 ⋅ yield strength).

For maximum shear stress criterion, analysis is performed according to the following formula:

Maximum shear stress criterion

Where:

τmax    – The Maximum shear stress criterion;
σ1, σ   – principal stresses.
